Whole bean
Freshly ground for full aroma – grind size depends on the machine.
Buying advice in detail
Italian espresso is less an origin than a style: strongly roasted, with body and little acidity, tailored to portafilter machines and Moka. Whether the beans suit your machine matters more for taste than the name on the package.
Roast level and machine
Medium to darker roasts are common for Moka and classic espresso preparation. Very dark roasts quickly taste bitter and smoky; very light ones are often sour and demanding for espresso.
Blend, Arabica, Robusta
Many classic blends contain some Robusta for crema and body. Pure Arabica is usually more aromatic and milder. The composition is often listed on the package – if not, it comes down to taste.
Roast date and packaging
A roast date is more informative than a best-before date alone. A valve and a tightly resealable bag protect the beans after opening.
Pack size
Coffee loses aroma after opening. If you drink little, smaller packs are a better choice than a large kilo bag.
Suitability for bean-to-cup machines
Some manufacturers advise caution with very oily beans, because they can put a strain on the grinder and brew group. A look at the manual helps.
When not to buy
- You prefer fruity, acidic filter coffee: A classic espresso blend is not designed for that.
- You have no grinder and do not want pre-ground coffee: Whole beans require a grinder.
- According to its manual, your bean-to-cup machine does not tolerate dark, oily beans: Then it is better to choose a variety the manufacturer approves.
Use & care
- Store beans airtight, in the dark and dry, not in the fridge or freezer next to other foods.
- Clean old coffee grounds and oil off the grinder regularly, otherwise fresh coffee quickly tastes stale.
- Set the grind size to suit your machine and change it only in small steps so you can taste the difference.
Frequently asked questions
Arabica or Robusta for espresso?
A blend with some Robusta gives more crema and body; pure Arabica is more aromatic but has less crema.
Which grind size for the Moka?
Medium-fine – finer than for filter, coarser than for a portafilter machine.
How long are beans good after roasting?
Best in the first few weeks. After that the aroma fades, even though the coffee is still drinkable.
Why is my espresso bitter or sour?
Bitter often points to a grind that is too fine, water that is too hot or a roast that is too dark; sour points to a grind that is too coarse or an extraction that is too short. Change only one variable at a time.
Can I also use espresso beans for filter coffee?
Yes, that is possible. The result usually tastes stronger and more bitter, though.
